WHY BMKB

Why English Speakers Choose BMKB for Their KSK Application

Applying for the Künstlersozialkasse on your own as an English speaker is frustrating. The application forms are only available in German, the eligibility criteria are complex, and a single mistake can delay your acceptance by months or lead to outright rejection.

BMKB is a Berlin-based KSK consultancy with deep expertise in the application process. We’ve helped freelance musicians, designers, writers, photographers, and other creatives successfully join the KSK, even in complicated cases involving mixed income, recent relocation to Germany, or previous rejections.

Every KSK application we prepare is handled personally. We don’t use templates or automated translations. We craft your income estimates, activity descriptions, and supporting arguments specifically for your situation, all in the precise German the KSK expects.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About the KSK Application

How much does KSK insurance cost?
Contributions are based on your estimated annual income. For example, with 10,000€ annual income, you pay approximately 170€ per month for health, pension, and nursing care insurance combined. Without the KSK, you’d pay roughly double.
Do I need to speak German to apply?
The application form and all correspondence with the KSK is in German. That’s exactly why we’re here. We handle everything in German on your behalf and communicate with you in English.
What is the minimum income requirement?
You need to earn at least €3,900 per year (profit, not revenue) from your artistic or publicist work. Career starters are exempt from this minimum for the first three years.
Can I have a side job and still be in the KSK?
Yes, as long as your artistic work remains your primary profession. You can earn additional income from non-artistic work within certain limits.
How long does the application take?
Typically 3 to 6 months from submission to acceptance, depending on the complexity of your case and the KSK’s current processing times.
Can non-EU citizens join the KSK?
Yes. You need a valid residence permit that allows freelance work in Germany. Your nationality does not affect your eligibility. Only your work and residency status matter.
What documents do I need for my KSK application?
You’ll need proof of your freelance registration (Gewerbeanmeldung or Finanzamt confirmation), examples of your artistic or publicist work, income records or estimates, and a valid residence permit if you’re a non-EU citizen. We help you gather and prepare everything.
Can BMKB help if my KSK application was rejected?
Yes. If your KSK application has been denied, we can review the rejection letter, identify the reasons, and help you file an objection (Widerspruch) in German. Many rejections can be overturned with the right documentation and argumentation.
